It was a pleasure to welcome the Guarda Nacional Republicana into IPS this week for an informative and essential school safety program. The initiative focused on the complexities of addictive substances and behaviours, covering topics ranging from drugs, alcohol, and nicotine to the increasingly prevalent concerns surrounding social media and gaming habits.
The session was specifically tailored for our Year 10 students; students aged 14 and 15. We were honoured to host local officers Luis and Miguel, who brought a wealth of experience to the classroom. They are seasoned veterans of this outreach program as well, and we have to thank them for delivering the information in English.
The officers delved into the multifaceted impacts of addiction on both physical and mental well-being. A particular emphasis was placed on distinguishing between immediate, short-term consequences and the often irreversible long-term effects of substance abuse. By providing this dual perspective, the officers offered the students a comprehensive understanding of the risks associated with these choices.
Our pupils engaged deeply with the material, demonstrating maturity and a keen interest in the legal framework of their host country. The officers were particularly impressed by the calibre of questions raised, which extended beyond personal health to address the broader societal implications of organised crime and drug distribution within local Portuguese communities.
