Celebrating 'Dia de Portugal'

On June 9th, between 9:10 AM and 12:30 PM, our Key Stage 2 students (from Year 3 to Year 6) came together to celebrate Portugal Day. It was a morning filled with joy, culture, tradition, and fantastic team spirit. Once again, it was an unforgettable day! Here is a brief summary of what each year group prepared for this great celebration:
The morning kicked off in style with Year 3 and Year 4 diving into Portuguese culture through traditional games, organised in partnership with the Jotra company. The energy was contagious!
Right after, the excitement grew with the iconic football match: Portugal vs. The Rest of the World, which featured great sportsmanship and lots of cheering from the crowd. This was a House competition for the students.
The creativity across the school truly came alive through the classroom doors and themes, starting with Year 3, who paid tribute to Portugal’s historical and natural connection to the ocean with their theme, O Mar (The Sea) – paying tribute to Portugal’s historical and natural connection to the ocean.
In Year 4 the Theme was O Futebol (Football), celebrating the great national passion for the sport.
The Year 5 Theme was O Hostel da Mariquinhas & Uma Casa Portuguesa – Year 5 faced the challenge of transforming their space into a true ode to Portuguese hospitality. Students were invited to bring objects, drawings, and other Portugal-related ideas from home to decorate their classroom doors. We were delighted to count on the presence and help of parents, who came to school to add their special touch to the decorations! The students also built a beautiful Mural da Saudade (Nostalgia Mural). Also in Year 5 students dressed for the occasion, showcasing incredible creativity for the contest that will elect the Best Maria and the Best Manuel!
Finally, the Year 6 theme, Brasil (Brazil) where they explored the cultural and linguistic bridges between the two countries. We had the very special presence of two mums, who came to help the students illustrate their classroom door and build a fantastic mural. This work highlighted the main differences between Portugal and Brazil, focusing on expressions and "Palavras de Cá e de Lá" (Words from Here and There). The morning ended in the best possible way, with Year 9 students teaching the younger ones how to dance samba. In the end, everyone had a great time dancing the traditional Malhão.
The celebrations were not over yet! During Friday’s assembly, teachers and students had the opportunity to share what each year's group achieved, as well as take a walk around the school to admire the murals of each class.
The grand winners will also be announced:
- The Most Original Door across all of KS2.
- The Best Maria and Best Manuel (the most creative costumes) in Year 5.
A special thank you to all teachers, students, the Jotra team, and, of course, the parents who gave their time and creativity to make this day so enriching.

Celebração do Dia de Portugal

No passado dia 9 de junho, entre as 9h10 e as 12h30, os nossos alunos do Key Stage 2 (do Year 3 ao Year 6) uniram-se para celebrar o Dia de Portugal. Foi uma manhã repleta de alegria, cultura, tradição e muito espírito de equipa. Uma vez mais, vivemos um dia inesquecível! Partilhamos um breve resumo do que cada ano preparou para esta grande festa:
A manhã começou em grande com os alunos do Year 3 e Year 4 a mergulharem na cultura portuguesa através de jogos tradicionais, organizados em parceria com a empresa Jotra. A energia foi contagiante!
Logo de seguida, a adrenalina subiu com o icónico jogo de futebol: Portugal contra o Resto do Mundo, onde não faltou fair-play e muito apoio das claques. Foi uma competição pelas Houses dos alunos.
Falando dos temas das salas e portas, o tema do Year 3 foi O Mar através de uma homenagem à ligação histórica e natural de Portugal com o oceano.
O tema do Year 4 foi O Futebol, celebrando-se a grande paixão nacional pelo desporto.
O Year 5 teve o desafio de transformar o seu espaço numa verdadeira ode à hospitalidade portuguesa, inspirando-se nos temas O Hostel da Mariquinhas e Uma Casa Portuguesa. Os alunos foram convidados a trazer de casa objetos, desenhos e outras ideias alusivas a Portugal para decorarem as portas das salas. Ficámos radiantes por contar com a presença e ajuda dos pais, que vieram à escola dar o seu toque especial na decoração!
Os alunos construíram ainda um bonito Mural da Saudade. Os alunos do Year 5 também se vestiram a rigor, demonstrando uma criatividade incrível para o concurso que vai eleger a Melhor Maria e o Melhor Manuel.
O Year 6 explorou as pontes culturais e linguísticas com o tema Brasil. Contámos com a presença muito especial de duas mães, que vieram ajudar os alunos a ilustrar a porta da sala e a construir um mural fantástico. Este trabalho destacou as principais diferenças entre Portugal e o Brasil, com foco nas expressões e Palavras de Cá e de Lá. A manhã terminou da melhor maneira possível com as alunas do Y9 a ensinar os alunos a sambar. No final todos se divertiram a dança o Malhão.
As celebrações ainda não terminaram! Durante a assembleia de sexta-feira, os professores e alunos terão a oportunidade de partilhar o que cada ano realizou, além de darem um passeio pela escola para admirar os murais de cada turma. Serão também anunciados os grandes vencedores:
- A Porta Mais Original de todo o KS2.
- A Melhor Maria e o Melhor Manuel (os fatos mais criativos) do Year 5.
Um agradecimento especial a todos os professores, alunos, à equipa da Jotra e, claro, aos pais que doaram o seu tempo e criatividade para tornar este dia tão enriquecedor.
