The Journey: Year 9 hike through Sintra for their unit on Navigation

The Journey: Year 9 hike through Sintra for their unit on Navigation

Our Year 9 pupils recently hiked through the scenic hills of Sintra as part of their Outdoor learning lessons (The Journey). The pupils are currently working on honing their navigation skills.

In total, 41 students tackled the undulating 5km route, stopping at a series of skills stations along the way - from whittling tent pegs and using a compass to identify landscape features, to pacing exercises, map symbol challenges, and a First Aid simulation. The experience also served as the perfect warm-up for the 35 students who have signed up for this year’s Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day, with one sharing:

“My group was mixed, and that was great, we bonded really well. We supported each other as we navigated between stations and I loved the fresh air, the views were amazing. I really enjoyed the freedom we were given to complete this activity.”

There is nothing more rewarding than a day out, seeing your students engaged and motivated. I look forward to more adventures like these.
