Oliver Cromwell – Hero or Villain?
Oliver Cromwell – Hero or Villain?
Oliver Cromwell – Hero or Villain? This was the question that Key Stage 3 pupils faced this week. Organised by Mr Tom Rogers, History teacher at BIS Coruna, IPS pupils took part in a Q&A webinar with a famous Historian, Peter Gaunt. Luke Provis, our Head of Humanities was fortunate to be student of Peter’s during his University days, and ensured our pupils made the most of this opportunity.
Professor of Modern History at the University of Chester, Peter Gaunt is an expert on a British Hero (or Villain for some) named Oliver Cromwell. Professor Gaunt is also the chair of the Cromwell Association and has written over 10 books on Cromwell and the English Civil War. Cromwell is often called the Father of English Democracy, and led England on a path to becoming the first modern European Democracy.
Despite not studying Cromwell in lessons, the pupils asked insightful questions which were answered by Professor Gaunt. Before the webinar pupils researched Cromwell to better prepare themselves. The topics included the atrocities in Ireland, Cromwell’s role in England, his tactics in the Civil Wars, as well as his personal life.
Mr Provis quoted “I am very proud of the pupils' interest, effort, and professionalism. It was wonderful to see such a high level of engagement. Furthermore, I believe it was a vital component in nurturing their interest in History, but also encouraging their desire to ensure academic rigour in their studies.”
On the back of the pupil’s enthusiasm and desire for another event like this, Mr Provis is in the process of emailing several Historians at UK universities to engage their interest. We look forward to the next chapter of History unfold…
