Everyone can do maths: everyone can!
Maths education has evolved greatly over the years, and teaching methods vary widely across different countries. From rote memorisation and repetitive drills to modern approaches that foster problem-solving skills, mathematical teaching methods have shifted to focus on understanding, application, and creativity.
At IPS Cascais, we want to share how we teach maths, so you know exactly how your child is learning and growing with our curriculum. Our chosen programme, White Rose Maths, is a highly respected approach that makes mathematics accessible, enjoyable, and enriching for every student, from Early Years to GCSE.
What is White Rose Maths?
At its core, White Rose Maths promotes a deeper level of understanding by focusing on mathematical thinking. This isn’t about memorising formulas; it’s about building the skills needed to approach problems, think critically, and develop a love for learning. Here’s what we aim for our young mathematicians to achieve through White Rose Maths:
- Confidence in recalling and applying maths knowledge in different situations.
- The ability to explain their methods and thought processes.
- Fluency in mathematical concepts across various topics.
- Efficiency in problem-solving and reasoning.
- Independent and creative thinking in maths.
The CPA Approach: Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract
White Rose Maths uses the CPA (Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract) approach to help students grasp mathematical concepts on multiple levels.
- Concrete – Using tangible objects for hands-on learning.
- Pictorial – Moving from objects to pictures and diagrams.
- Abstract – Developing the skills needed for mental calculations and algebra.
This progressive method ensures that pupils understand mathematical ideas thoroughly before moving on to more challenging concepts.
Mastery in Maths
White Rose Maths is based on a philosophy of "mastery" in learning maths. The idea is that mastery is a journey rather than a destination. Each year, our Schemes of Learning guide students through logical progressions of the National Curriculum, ensuring no one is left behind.
To implement this mastery approach, we take these six practical steps with each new topic:
- Diagnostic Pre-Assessment – To understand each child’s starting point and address gaps.
- High-Quality Group Instruction – Interactive, engaging lessons for foundational understanding.
- Regular Progress Monitoring – Formative assessments that guide our next steps.
- Corrective Instruction – Targeted support if a concept isn’t fully grasped.
- Parallel Formative Assessments – Follow-up evaluations to confirm understanding.
- Enrichment Activities – Extension work for pupils ready to go further.
Supporting Learning at Home
White Rose Maths also supports families. During COVID-19, White Rose created free daily video lessons, worksheets, and parent workbooks. Today, resources continue to be available, including apps, webinars, downloadable workbooks and videos explaining concepts and methods. All you need do is select the correct level and topic for your child.
